Why you should own your website, not rent it

Ask a business owner who built their website, and you'll usually hear an agency's name. Ask them who owns it, and the room goes quiet. The hosting is on the agency's account. The domain sometimes is too. The code lives in a builder only the agency can operate. And every change, however small, goes through a ticket and an invoice.

That arrangement has a name. It's renting. And like most renting, it feels fine until the day you want to change something, move somewhere, or part ways.

The quiet costs of renting

• Every text change is a ticket. A new phone number, a seasonal note, updated opening hours: days of waiting and a line on next month's invoice.
• You can't leave without pain. If the site lives in the agency's accounts and tooling, switching agencies often means rebuilding from scratch.
• The retainer never ends. Many businesses pay monthly for years for a site that rarely changes, because canceling means losing access.
• You don't control your own uptime. If the agency's account lapses or the relationship sours, your website is collateral.

What ownership actually means

Ownership is not a feeling; it's a checklist. The domain is registered to you. The hosting bills to your card. The code sits in a repository under your account. And, the part that changes everything, you can modify the site yourself without asking anyone's permission.

That last item used to be the hard one. Owning code you can't edit is like owning a car you can't drive. This is where building with Claude Code changed our whole model: when your site can be edited in plain English, ownership stops being symbolic and starts being practical.

Every Sawa Sites build ends the same way: the project moves into accounts you own, we do a short handover call, and we show you how to make your first edit yourself by asking Claude Code. After that, you genuinely do not need us, and that's exactly the point. Many clients still send us the bigger jobs, but it's a choice, not a hostage situation.

You paid for the website. You should hold the keys. It's that simple.
